After completing initial sessions for their self-titled 2015 album at Rockfield Studios, Wire emerged with 19 tracks. Among them were 11 songs that formed a cohesive, aesthetically unified album. But, in true Wire fashion, the remaining material pointed in a different direction—suggesting a band already evolving beyond the project they were actively working on. These tracks became the foundation for Nocturnal Koreans.
The distinction between the two sets of recordings stems from differing approaches to the studio process itself. Nocturnal Koreans emphasizes studio construction over live performance, using the recording environment as an instrument in its own right, rather than simply a means of documenting the band playing together.
While it’s common to highlight Wire’s capacity for self-reinvention, that alone doesn’t tell the full story. The drive to explore new ideas is deeply ingrained in the band’s creative DNA. But what sets Wire apart is their ability to balance innovation with a core identity—an unmistakable character and attitude that remains recognizable, without ever becoming formulaic.
This ongoing tension between evolution and essence is what gives Wire their unique status: a long-established band still forging boldly ahead, creating original music that is always distinctly Wire—yet continually reimagined and refreshed with each new release.
