Maladroit was made in a hurry and it sounds like it, which is the best thing about it. Weezer finished the Green Album tour, went straight into Cello Studios, and cut an album in weeks while posting rough mixes on their own message board and asking fans which songs should make the cut. The label found out late. Geffen released it in May 2002 anyway.
The result is the heaviest record in the catalogue. "Dope Nose" opens on a riff that owes more to Thin Lizzy than to power pop, "American Gigolo" and "Slob" are built on genuinely metal guitar tones, and "Take Control" is close to hardcore by Weezer standards. "Keep Fishin'" is the pop moment, and its video, featuring the Muppets, is the best thing the band ever put on television.
Thirteen songs in thirty four minutes, self produced with Tom Lord-Alge mixing and Stephen Marcussen mastering. It divided people at the time and has quietly become a favourite among fans who like their Weezer loud and unfussy.
