Flex Your Head is the compilation that put Washington, D.C. hardcore on the map. Released by Dischord Records in January 1982, it packs 32 songs from 11 bands onto a single LP, documenting a young scene that was already burning through bands at a furious rate.
The lineup reads like a roll call: The Teen Idles, Untouchables, State of Alert, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Youth Brigade, Red C, Void, Iron Cross, Artificial Peace and Deadline. Each gets a few songs, most of them short and fast. The title comes from a line shouted in Minor Threat's cover of Wire's "12XU."
The first pressing of 4,000 copies sold out within a week, and the record has been repressed many times since as a founding document of American hardcore. The cover has changed several times over the years, and the current edition carries the D.C. flag design.
