A dead woman's mixtape turned into one of the most successful soundtracks ever made. When Peter Quill's cassette started playing over the opening of the 2014 Marvel film, it did something no soundtrack had managed before: an album made entirely of previously released songs went to number one on the Billboard 200. It held the top of the soundtrack chart for eleven straight weeks, sixteen in total, and had sold north of 1.75 million copies in the US within three years.

The first LP is that tape, sequenced exactly as it plays in the film. Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" opens, and from there it runs through Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love," Bowie's "Moonage Daydream," Norman Greenbaum, the Jackson 5, 10cc, The Runaways, and a closing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Seventies AM radio, curated by a screenwriter with unusually good taste.

The second LP is the part most people never hear. Tyler Bates wrote much of the score during pre-production so that scenes could be shot to the music instead of the other way around, and James Gunn has said the score is the underappreciated element of the first film, permanently overshadowed by the songs. Given a full side each, cuts like "The Final Battle Begins," "Guardians United," and "Black Tears" finally get room to land.
