Ten years in the making and one of the most explosive breakthroughs in the history of hard rock. Twisted Sister had been grinding out five-night residencies at bars and clubs across New York and New Jersey since 1972, building a reputation as the loudest, most painted, most gloriously unrespectable band on the circuit, before releasing a third album on May 10, 1984 that turned them into MTV superstars almost overnight. As Dee Snider himself put it, 1984 was the year of the Sister, and no one who lived through that summer would argue.

Produced by Tom Werman and recorded at the Record Plant in New York, Westlake in Los Angeles, and Cherokee in Hollywood between February and March 1984, Stay Hungry opened with two of the most immediately recognizable songs of the era. "We're Not Gonna Take It," with its iconic video featuring Animal House's Mark Metcalf as an apoplectic father getting repeatedly destroyed by Dee Snider in full war paint, became the anthem of a generation of long-haired, denim-clad teenagers looking for a voice. "I Wanna Rock" followed, every bit as direct and every bit as irresistible. The album went on to achieve triple platinum certification in the United States, and within a year its singer was sitting in front of a US Senate committee alongside Frank Zappa and John Denver being asked to explain himself to Tipper Gore, a distinction few rock albums have earned.

This 40th anniversary edition is pressed on translucent blood-red double vinyl and adds a bonus live set recorded in San Bernardino in 1984, the same legendary performance originally broadcast by MTV as Stay Hungry Live and long considered one of the great hard rock concert documents of its era. The definitive edition of one of the defining albums of the decade.
