By 1970, The Temptations were twelve albums into their run with Motown's Gordy label, and Psychedelic Shack finds them almost completely abandoning the polished Motown Sound formula in favor of something stranger and more urgent. Written entirely by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and produced by Whitfield, the album dives fully into psychedelic soul, trading tight three-minute pop structures for looser, more experimental arrangements that mirrored the social upheaval of the era.
The title track became a genuine hit, climbing to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, number four on Cash Box, and number two on the R&B chart, but the album's most historically significant moment is the group's original recording of "War," a song that would become a massive hit for Edwin Starr later that same year. Whitfield's production throughout leans hard into wah-wah guitars, extended grooves, and socially conscious lyricism, a clear departure from the tightly choreographed hits that made the group famous just a few years earlier.
The record also captures a group under real strain. Paul Williams, dealing with sickle-cell disease and years of alcoholism, was frequently unable to perform during sessions, leading the band to bring in Richard Street as a stand-in, while mounting frustration over creative control and treatment from Motown was already setting the stage for Eddie Kendricks' departure the following year. Despite that turmoil, Psychedelic Shack holds up as one of the most fully realized entries in the group's psychedelic soul period, a record that still sounds vital and forward-thinking decades later.
This limited edition pressing comes on 180-gram virgin vinyl, a great way to hear one of Motown's boldest creative left turns the way it was meant to be heard.
