The Tear Garden - The Brown Acid Caveat [Tangerine]

The title comes from Woodstock in 1969, when festivalgoers were warned from the stage to steer clear of a bad batch of brown acid. Nearly fifty years later, cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy and Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots turned that warning into the name of their seventh full-length album as The Tear Garden. Released in 2017, it was paid for directly by fans through a crowdfunding campaign that finished well past its goal.

Key's electronics, bass, and percussion meet Ka-Spel's hushed, storytelling vocals across twelve long, winding pieces. The extra funding brought in a wider cast than usual: guitarist Martijn De Kleer and string player Patrick Q. Wright, both Legendary Pink Dots alumni, plus bassist Ryan Moore and percussionist Dre Robinson. "Strange Land" sets the tone, and from "Amy's Personality" and "Sinister Science" through "The Sound Of Space Escaping," the record sinks into the kind of slow-burning psychedelia this partnership has been chasing since the 1980s. At well over an hour, it is a record for late nights and headphones from two of the most singular voices in underground music.
