Few debut albums have served as such a complete and accurate time capsule of their moment. Released on September 28, 1992, Experience is the record that introduced the world to The Prodigy, and it is as vivid and kinetic a document of UK rave culture at its euphoric peak as anything committed to tape in that era. As one contemporary critic put it, if future generations want to understand what happened in 1992, this album will serve them far better than any compilation ever could.

Liam Howlett, the sole composer and producer behind the record, had been cutting his teeth on the Essex rave circuit before forming The Prodigy with dancer Keith Flint and Leeroy Thornhill, later joined by MC Maxim Reality. Recorded at Earthbound Studios and built from intricate breakbeats, lush analog pads, euphoric piano riffs, and an arsenal of creative samples including a Max Romeo reggae break on the standout "Out of Space," the album moves through breakbeat hardcore, acid house, jungle, and moments of ambient space with the restless energy of a producer still discovering the outer limits of what he could do. Every single spawned from the record cracked the UK top twelve: "Charly," "Everybody in the Place," "Fire/Jericho," "Out of Space," and "Wind It Up (Rewound)" all became rave floor staples before the album had even appeared. The album itself peaked at number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified platinum by the BPI for over 300,000 copies sold, a remarkable achievement for a debut rooted so firmly in the underground.

Experience closes with "Death of the Prodigy Dancers," a live track featuring Maxim on vocals that hints at the band's explosive concert reputation from its earliest days. It remains a landmark of British electronic music and an essential piece of the record collection for anyone serious about where the 1990s came from.
