Eyes to the Light is the debut full-length from Washington, D.C. trio The Effects, released on Dischord Records in September 2017. The band formed in 2014 around guitarist and singer Devin Ocampo, whose résumé runs through Faraquet, Medications and Smart Went Crazy, with Matt Dowling of Deleted Scenes on bass and keyboards and David Rich of Buildings on drums.
After three self-released singles, the trio went to Magpie Cage Studio in Baltimore to record and mix with J. Robbins. The result is a tight, nine-song set that updates the D.C. sound with knotty arrangements and progressive rock ambition while keeping the hooks in plain view. "New Isolation" opens the record, and "Anchors Aweigh," "Low Lier" and "Set it Off" show how much melody the band can thread through all that precision.
A sharp, detailed record for fans of Faraquet and the mathier end of the Dischord catalog. LP from Dischord Records.
