The Cramps - Psychedelic Jungle

Recorded at A&M Studios in January 1981 and released later that year, Psychedelic Jungle is the second Cramps album and the one where the formula fully crystallized. Bryan Gregory had walked out, Kid Congo Powers had walked in, and the band leaned harder than ever into the primitive — fewer chords, more reverb, and a set list dredged from the strangest corners of pre-Beatles American 45s.

This is the album that gave the world "Goo Goo Muck," a cover of a 1962 Ronnie Cook obscurity that Lux Interior turned into the definitive Cramps calling card. Around it sit "Green Fuz," "The Crusher," "Rockin' Bones" and "Green Door" — all covers, all rebuilt from the ground up — alongside originals like "Voodoo Idol," "Caveman," "The Natives Are Restless" and the immortal "Don't Eat Stuff Off the Sidewalk." Poison Ivy's guitar does most of the heavy lifting, dragging every riff through tremolo and tape echo until it sounds like it was recorded inside a haunted tiki bar.

More than forty years later this remains one of the most influential records in the psychobilly canon, and one of the very few albums that genuinely sounds like nothing else in rock and roll.
