The Church - Priest = Aura

The Church named their eighth album after a mistake. Steve Kilbey misread a Spanish fan's English vocabulary notes, where "cura" means priest, and the phrase Priest = Aura stuck. What followed, in 1992, was the record Kilbey would later call the band's undisputed masterpiece.

Recorded at Studios 301 in Sydney and produced by the band with Gavin MacKillop, Priest = Aura was the first Church album with drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, best known for his work with Patti Smith, and his loose, almost jazz-like feel opens the songs up. Steve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, and Marty Willson-Piper weave guitars into long, psychedelic, dream-pop tapestries on "Aura," "Ripple," "Feel," "Dome," and the epic "The Disillusionist," across more than an hour of music.

Underrated on release, it is now widely considered the band's artistic high point, so much so that The Church performed it in full on their 30th anniversary tour in 2011.
