How Do You Burn? is the record the Afghan Whigs made in pieces, passed between home studios and remote sessions during a period when nobody could get in a room together, and somehow it sounds more like a band playing live than anything they had done in a decade. Released in September 2022, it was their first album in five years and their fourth since reforming.
Mark Lanegan appears on two tracks. He died in February 2022, months before release, which gives "Take Me There" and "Jyja" a weight nobody planned for and nobody can hear past now. Marcy Mays, who sang "My Curse" on Gentlemen nearly thirty years earlier, returns for "Domino And Jimmy" and trades verses with Greg Dulli like no time has passed at all. "I'll Make You See God" opens the album at a sprint, all fuzz bass and gospel menace, and "The Getaway" is the closest the band has come to a straight pop song without flinching.
Dulli produced with Christopher Thorn, and Howie Weinberg mastered. The arrangements lean harder on strings and keys than the guitar records that made the band's name, which suits a set of songs about running out of road.
This limited pressing comes on 180 gram baby pink vinyl in an embossed gatefold jacket on red foil board, exclusive to independent retail.
