Released on January 29, 1991, Uncle Anesthesia stands as a pivotal moment in the history of the Screaming Trees. After years of building a cult following on Greg Ginn’s legendary underground label, SST, this was the band's first full-length offering for Epic Records. Recorded at the iconic London Bridge Studio in Seattle, the album captures the band in a state of high-octane evolution. It features a heavy, "crunchy" production style—a collaboration between the band, engineer Terry Date, and Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell—that successfully translated their lysergic, garage-rock roots into a powerful major-label sound.
The album serves as a final document of the original lineup, marking the last appearance of founding drummer Mark Pickerel. It is a record characterized by its "swirling, organ-drenched" textures and the increasingly confident baritone of Mark Lanegan. From the driving, melodic energy of "Bed of Roses" to the gritty, psychedelic sprawl of the title track and "Beyond This Horizon," Uncle Anesthesia is 47 minutes of pure Pacific Northwest atmosphere. It also features two tracks originally found on the Something About Today EP, fully integrated into the band's most cohesive statement to date.
Visually, the album is just as striking, featuring original cover artwork by the renowned pop-surrealist Mark Ryden. This vinyl edition brings out the depth of the "heavy-yet-hazy" production, allowing the interplay between Gary Lee Conner’s jagged guitar leads and the rhythm section to shine. As the bridge between their indie-rock beginnings and the massive success of Sweet Oblivion, Uncle Anesthesia remains a vital, mandatory chapter for fans of the Screaming Trees and the early 90s alternative movement.
