Sara Bareilles - Amidst The Chaos

After years on Broadway writing and starring in Waitress, Sara Bareilles returned in 2019 with an album shaped by a country that suddenly felt unfamiliar. Amidst The Chaos is her response to the political upheaval that followed 2016, but it is written as a set of personal songs rather than slogans, and it is the warmest, most grown-up record she has made.

Producer T Bone Burnett gave the songs room to breathe, trading pop polish for a warmer, more soulful and organic sound. "Armor" became an anthem of the #MeToo moment, "Fire" and "No Such Thing" show off her gift for a sticky melody, and "Miss Simone" pays tribute to Nina Simone. "A Safe Place To Land," a duet with John Legend, confronts the immigration crisis head on.

The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200, and "Saint Honesty" won the Grammy for Best American Roots Performance, a fitting honour for a record that sounds rooted in a way her earlier work rarely did.
