Originally released in 1995, Salt Peter by Ruby (the moniker of the formidable Lesley Rankine) was a cornerstone of the mid-90s electronica scene. A favorite of "students, clubbers, and vinyl junkies" alike, it blended industrial grit with trip-hop’s atmospheric sprawl. Twenty-five years later, during the isolation of a COVID-19 lockdown and following the loss of her mother, Rankine found herself in a unique creative position. Alongside her brother, Scott Firth (bassist for Public Image Ltd), she began "noodling around" with old ideas. The result wasn't a mere remaster, but Salt Peter 25—a complete, ground-up rebuild of the entire album with entirely new production, arrangements, and vocals.

Rather than looking back with nostalgia, Salt Peter 25 pushes the material into darker, more uncompromising territory. While Rankine’s distinctive, emotive vocals remain the centerpiece, the songs have matured into an "exciting new and unique animal." With Scott’s additional production and engineering, the album features densely textured soundscapes that echo the quirky, experimental spirit of the original while reflecting a more sophisticated, mature aesthetic. It is a record born of grief and lockdown, carrying a weight and resonance that feels both contemporary and timeless.

This deluxe release is pressed on "delicious" orange double vinyl and housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve. The artwork is a poignant tribute to Rankine’s family, featuring a striking cover photograph of her mother along with other archival family photos. Designed by Toronto-based artist Henry Faber, the packaging serves as a visual bridge to the original 1995 aesthetics while honoring the deeply personal journey that led to this reimagined masterpiece.
