Long out of print and highly coveted by collectors, Chronic Town is the 1982 debut EP that introduced R.E.M. to the world. Recorded at Drive-In Studios with producer Mitch Easter, this five-track release served as the foundational blueprint for the American alternative rock movement. While the band had already made waves with the "Radio Free Europe" single on Hib-Tone, Chronic Town was their first major statement on I.R.S. Records, establishing the "Southern Gothic" jangle and mysterious atmosphere that would soon define their legendary status.

The EP is a concentrated dose of the band's early energy. From the nervous, propulsive drive of "Wolves, Lower" to the haunting, layered harmonies of "Gardening at Night," the record captures a young band brimming with unique ideas. Peter Buck’s ringing Rickenbacker chords, Mike Mills’ melodic, walking basslines, and Bill Berry’s tight, economic drumming provide the perfect backdrop for Michael Stipe’s elusive, impressionistic vocals. Even in these early stages, tracks like "1,000,000" and "Stumble" showcased a rhythmic complexity and vocal chemistry that was unlike anything else in the post-punk landscape.

This limited edition black vinyl reissue finally makes this essential piece of rock history accessible once again. Every effort has been made to preserve the raw, "woodsy," and slightly murky production of the original sessions, allowing the songs to retain their timeless, dreamlike quality. For anyone looking to understand the roots of indie rock, Chronic Town is where the map was first drawn.
