Originally released in 1993 as part of Warp’s groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence series, Surfing On Sine Waves is the sole album under Richard D. James’ Polygon Window alias, a pivotal chapter in the evolution of ambient techno. The album sits alongside contributions from Autechre, The Black Dog, F.U.S.E., and others, and is emblematic of the era’s experimental approach to electronic music.
Polygon Window was born from James’ ongoing exploration of sound, with the name originally appearing as a track under his The Dice Man pseudonym. The album’s title, chosen by Warp co-founder Rob Mitchell, reflects James’ fascination with sonic textures and playful abstraction. Surfing On Sine Waves debuted at #2 on the UK Dance charts and cemented James’ reputation as a visionary in electronic music.
2025’s Expanded Edition unites the original album with its 1993 companion EP Quoth, presenting both releases as a single entity on vinyl and CD for the first time. With expanded track sequencing and remastered audio, this edition offers an immersive journey into the lush, undulating rhythms, hypnotic textures, and forward-thinking sound design that made the original release a landmark in the history of electronic music.
