Only Pavement would get a career-spanning film that refuses to be a normal documentary, and only Pavement would get a soundtrack this gloriously scrambled to go with it. Pavements, Alex Ross Perry's meta-documentary about the band, folds together a real reunion tour, a fake Oscar-bait biopic called Range Life, a jukebox stage musical and a museum exhibition. The soundtrack album does the same thing to your turntable.

Across four sides it cuts between dialogue snippets from the film, scenes from the fictional biopic with Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus, and cast recordings from the Slanted! Enchanted! musical, which turn "Here," "We Dance" and "Give It a Day" into full-throated show tunes. Threaded through all of it is the band itself, captured in rehearsal in Portland and Los Angeles and on stage in Stockholm, Paris and at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, tearing through "Grounded," "Harness Your Hopes," "Unfair" and "Type Slowly."

There are real finds for the faithful too: a previously unreleased cover of Jim Pepper's "Witchitai-To," a 1992 John Peel session take of "Circa 1762," and Snail Mail performing "Shoot the Singer." The full-band performances were mixed by Bryce Goggin, the engineer behind the band's classic albums, so the live material hits with real weight.

This Matador edition spreads 41 tracks over two LPs in a gatefold sleeve. Part live album, part comedy record, part love letter, and entirely in keeping with a band that never did anything the straightforward way.
