There is metal before Vulgar Display Of Power and metal after it. Released in 1992, Pantera's sixth album took the thrash of the eighties, slowed it down, tuned it low and hit harder than anyone thought possible. The genre it defined even has a name: groove metal.
Produced by Terry Date at Pantego Sound, right here in Texas, the record is built on Dimebag Darrell's massive, stuttering riffs and Vinnie Paul's pounding drums, with Rex Brown locking it all down on bass. Phil Anselmo's vocals swing from bellowing rage to something close to menace. "Walk" is the riff every guitarist learns, "Mouth For War" and "A New Level" are pure aggression, and "This Love" and "Hollow" show the band could build tension as well as unleash it.
The album charted for 78 consecutive weeks, went double platinum in the US, and became one of the most influential heavy records of the 1990s. Arlington's finest never sounded meaner.
This edition is pressed on black and grey marbled vinyl.
