Since forming in the Stockholm suburb of Bandhagen in 1990, Opeth has defied every convention of the metal genre. Their 1995 debut, Orchid, remains a definitive classic—a record that "crushed the odds" by blending the raw, annihilating energy of Swedish death metal with the intricate, acoustic-led sophistication of 70s progressive rock. Most tracks exceed the ten-minute mark, showcasing Mikael Åkerfeldt’s early mastery of atmospheric tension, shifting from "blackened screams" to "shimmering, folk-inspired" interludes.
This 2LP vinyl reissue represents the ultimate technical presentation of the album. Cut at half-speed at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell (famed for his work with The Beatles and ABBA), the audio has been "lovingly remastered" by Jens Bogren under Åkerfeldt’s direct guidance. This process ensures that the "intrinsic intensity" of the original sessions—often described as "atmospheric and ghostly"—is preserved with a new level of clarity, punch, and stereo separation.
