Released in September 2021, I Was / I Am is the bridge between Noah Kahan's polished pop beginnings and the folk-rooted songwriting that made Stick Season a sensation a year later. It finds him writing about mental health, home and growing up with a new directness, in a sound that leans further toward acoustic guitars and open space.
"Godlight" and "Animal" pair restless energy with stadium-sized hooks, while "Someone Like You," a duet with Joy Oladokun, ranks among his warmest recordings. "Part Of Me" sets the tone at the start, and the closing pair of "Bury Me" and "Howling" point directly toward the confessional style of what came next.
Five years on, it plays as the moment Kahan figured out who he wanted to be as a writer, and it remains a fan favorite for exactly that reason.
This limited 5-Year Anniversary Edition presents the ten-track album on tangerine vinyl.
