Long before Nightmares On Wax became synonymous with the "chilled" Balearic sound, they were at the cutting edge of the UK’s electronic underground. As part of the N.O.W. Is The Time campaign, Warp Records presents the definitive double vinyl reissue of their 1991 debut, A Word of Science (The 1st & Final Chapter). This album captures the original duo of George Evelyn and Kevin Harper at their most experimental, bridging the gap between Sheffield’s "Yorkshire Bleep" techno scene and the soulful, sample-heavy downtempo that would soon take over the world.

A Word of Science is a radical document of 1991, fusing dancefloor anthems like "Aftermath" and "Dextrous" with the "smoky microfunk" of tracks like "A Case of Funk" and "Biofeedback." While later albums focused on organic grooves, this debut is a masterclass in early Warp ingenuity—layering paranoid breakbeats, minimalist house, and old-school hip-hop shout-outs into a unique "experiment" (hence the title). It remains the only album released by the group as a duo before Evelyn transitioned N.O.W. into a solo vehicle, making it an essential "first and final" chapter in electronic music history.

For this special 25th Anniversary reissue, Warp has re-cut the album as a double LP for significantly improved bass response. This edition also marks a major milestone for collectors: it includes three tracks ("B.W.T.M.," "Sal Batardes," and "E.A.S.E.") that were excluded from the original 1991 single-LP release, appearing here on vinyl for the first time. Housed in a double gatefold sleeve with artwork by The Designers Republic, this is the definitive way to experience the roots of the N.O.W. sound.
