Miley Cyrus - Bangerz [10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition]

In 2013 Miley Cyrus set fire to everything anyone thought they knew about her, and Bangerz was the accelerant. Released in October of that year on RCA, it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and spent the following twelve months as the most argued-about pop album in America.

The production is the story. Mike WiLL Made-It anchors the record with the trap-leaning low end that made "We Can't Stop" and "23" inescapable, while Dr. Luke and Cirkut handle the widescreen pop moments. "Wrecking Ball" went to number one and remains the vocal performance that shut up a lot of people who were not listening closely. Deeper in, "My Darlin'" flips "Stand By Me" with Future, "Adore You" opens the album on something genuinely tender, and "Maybe You're Right" and "Someone Else" show the country-raised writer underneath all the noise.

A decade on it reads less like a stunt and more like a hinge point, the album where mainstream pop and Southern rap production fully collapsed into each other. Plenty of records have followed the template since.
