There are a handful of albums that genuinely changed the course of heavy music. Master of Puppets is one of them. Released on March 3rd, 1986, Metallica's third album arrived as a fully realized statement of intent from a band operating at a level no one in metal had reached before, and it has never relinquished its place at the top of the canon.

Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen with producer Flemming Rasmussen, the album is a masterclass in precision, power, and ambition. The title track, "Battery," "Disposable Heroes," and "Orion" remain among the most celebrated and studied compositions in the history of hard rock, music that rewards both the gut and the intellect in equal measure. It became the first Metallica album to achieve RIAA Platinum certification upon release, has since been certified six times Platinum in the United States, and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

In 2016, Master of Puppets became the first metal album ever inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, recognized as a work of cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance. The honor was long overdue.

The album also carries a profound and enduring sadness. It was the last record to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who died in a tour bus accident in Sweden during the album's promotional tour. His presence runs through every track, a reminder of an irreplaceable talent lost far too soon.

Essential. Immortal. Indispensable.
