Released on November 1, 1994, Youthanasia is Megadeth's sixth studio album and one of the most commercially successful and debated records of their career. Recorded in a custom-built warehouse studio in South Phoenix, Arizona with producer Max Norman, the album found Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson, and Nick Menza continuing the evolution toward a heavier, more melodic sound that had begun with Countdown to Extinction, trading the scattershot speed of their thrash roots for something more focused, powerful, and precise.
The title is a pun on euthanasia, reflecting Mustaine's sharp-eyed concern for a younger generation drowning in violence and drugs, and that socially conscious perspective runs through the album's lyrically diverse terrain, touching on mythology, nuclear war, gambling, and mortality. The result entered the Billboard 200 at number four and went platinum, powered by the churning groove of lead single "Train of Consequences" and the deeply affecting "A Tout le Monde," a meditation on the last moments of life that remains one of the most distinctive and beloved songs in the entire Megadeth catalog. "Reckoning Day," "Elysian Fields," and "Blood of Heroes" further showcase a band operating with clarity and confidence, every riff trained precisely on its target.
As Dave Mustaine himself put it at the time, "it's been called a thrash album, it's been called a rock album, and it's even been called an alternative album. To me it can only be called a Megadeth album. That should be enough."
Now available on double black vinyl with remastered audio from the original mixes, presented in the definitive format for one of the most pivotal records in the Megadeth story.
