Manu Chao - Viva Tu

Seventeen years is a long time to stay quiet, especially for someone who never really stopped playing. After 2007's La Radiolina, Manu Chao walked away from the album cycle altogether, turning up on street corners, in small bars, and at benefit shows around the world while his records kept finding new listeners on their own. Viva Tu, released in September 2024, is the former Mano Negra frontman's first studio album since then, and it sounds like he never left.

Chao produced the whole thing himself, and the approach is as loose and handmade as ever. Nylon-string guitar, shuffling rhythms, and sing-along choruses carry thirteen songs in under forty minutes, with lyrics that slip between Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English, sometimes inside a single verse. The title track is a warm toast to ordinary people, "São Paulo Motoboy" salutes the delivery riders of Brazil's biggest city, and "Vecinos En El Mar" and "Cuatro Calles" keep his eye on the street. Two guests fit right in: French singer Laeti on "Tu Te Vas," and Willie Nelson, of all people, on the easygoing "Heaven's Bad Day."

The return was welcomed warmly. Viva Tu reached the top five in France and the top ten in several other European countries, and reviews praised its warmth and emotional pull. It does not reinvent the sound that made Clandestino a worldwide favorite, and it does not try to. It is the work of a songwriter who knows exactly what he does best.

This limited edition is pressed on blue vinyl, a fitting look for a record this sunny and sea-struck. For longtime fans it is the album they stopped expecting, and for newcomers it is an easy way in.
