The record that introduced Lush to the world, back in print for the first time in 35 years. Originally released in 1990 to bring the band's earliest work to US and Japanese audiences, Gala remains one of the most essential documents of the early shoegaze era, a breathtaking introduction to a band who arrived fully formed and unlike anyone else.
Gathering the band's debut EP Scar (1989), and the Mad Love and Sweetness and Light EPs (both 1990) in reverse chronological order, the compilation captures Miki Berenyi, Emma Anderson, Steve Rippon, and Chris Acland at their most visceral and beguiling, layers of chiming guitars and crystalline vocals washing over each other in waves of euphoric noise. Alongside the core collection sit two additional tracks: a cover of ABBA's "Hey Hey Helen" and Robin Guthrie's extended mix of "Scarlet," both as captivating as anything in the main set.
This 35th anniversary reissue has been freshly remastered by Kevin Vanbergen in 2025 and dressed in deluxe artwork designed by Chris Bigg, featuring original artwork by the legendary v23 partnership of Vaughan Oliver and Chris Bigg. A landmark of 4AD's golden era, presented as beautifully as it deserves.
