Originally released in 1998 on the legendary Dischord Records, Artificial Horizon is the sixth full-length LP from Baltimore’s Lungfish. Capturing the group at their most "austere and powerful," the record distills their signature sound into a series of tightly wound, trance-like compositions. It is a "monolithic and visceral" document of a band that eschews special effects for a steady, meditative pulse—allowing the "incantatory and philosophical" lyrics of the enigmatic Daniel Higgs to rise and fall like ritual chants.
Across eleven tracks, guitarist Asa Osborne, bassist Nathan Bell, and drummer Mitchell Feldstein create a "rattle-your-ribcage" rhythm section that moves with unwavering intent. From the "ominous and heavy" instrumental opener "Black Helicopters" to the "sturdy drone-rock" of "Pray for the Living," the album is a "major triumph" of minimalism and spiritual intensity. Long out of print on vinyl, this 2026 Metallic Silver Repress restores the "physical weight and high-fidelity grit" of a record that many consider the "singular vision" of the Lungfish idiom.
