A short, sharp shock of industrial post-punk and nocturnal intensity.
Recorded in their home studio in Ensenada, Baja California, Datura marks a visceral evolution for Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. On their sixth studio album, the Mexican duo strips away the sprawling psychedelic wig-outs of their past, replacing them with a "big and aggressive" sound that is lean, direct, and entirely devoid of fat. Inspired by the heavy roots of The Congos, the cold no-wave of Ike Yard, and the dark modular textures of Hiro Kone, Datura is a record of intense emotions and insomnia, harnessing an "in the room" energy that feels dangerously close.
The album’s formidable sonics are the result of a powerhouse collaboration: mixed by Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes) and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control). Guitarist Alberto González and singer/guitarist Lorena Quintanilla have crafted a narrative that covers everything from cultural colonialism to strange dreams, all centered around the titular "Datura"—a nocturnal flower that is as hallucinogenic as it is poisonous. Like the resilient plant that regrows despite every effort to clear it, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete have returned from the trials of the early 2020s more dynamic than ever. This edition is pressed on striking Blue Vinyl, perfectly matching the dark, "flower that opens at night" aesthetic of their most potent work to date.
