In 2013, a 16-year-old Lorde asserted herself as the voice of a generation with her debut, Pure Heroine, which went triple platinum and won two Grammy Awards. Four years later, she returned with Melodrama, recorded over an eighteen-month period with co-writer and co-producer Jack Antonoff, a partnership that would go on to define both of their careers in the years since.
Composed largely in New Zealand, Melodrama plays as a genuine concept record, structured around the arc of a single house party, its highs, its comedowns, and everything in between. Lorde has described it as an album about heartbreak, solitude, and loneliness, and that emotional throughline runs across tracks like "Green Light," "Liability," "Sober," and "Homemade Dynamite," each capturing a different stage of the night and the feelings underneath it. The production is more maximalist and emotionally raw than her debut, trading the minimalism of Pure Heroine for something bigger and more theatrical without losing her direct, conversational songwriting.
Melodrama debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada as well, becoming Lorde's first US number-one album. Critics responded with near-universal acclaim, and the record went on to receive a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, later being recognized as one of the defining pop albums of its decade.
This vinyl LP pressing brings one of the 2010s' most acclaimed records to the format it deserves.
