Light Conductor - Sequence Three

Sequence Three closes the opening trilogy from Light Conductor, the Montréal synth-drone project of Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy) and Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes). It is their first album in five years, and it consolidates everything the first two sequences built while leaning harder into the darker unease that has always run underneath their sound.

The duo apply rock-scale sound design to minimalist forms, running restored vintage synthesizers through tube compression and drenching them in pink and brown noise. The result is all queasy modulation, sparse beats and slow, languorous melodic lines. "She Glitters The Dust" and "Omenize" open with a restless shimmer, "Ghost City Radio" drifts in like a half-tuned broadcast, and the closing "Supercontinent" feels tectonic in both scale and pace. Comparisons to Spiritualized, Cluster, William Basinski and GAS still hold, but this is the most self-assured the project has ever sounded.

As with the previous entries, the cover carries minimalist geometric artwork by Constellation co-founder Ian Ilavsky.
