Lagwagon - Hoss [Beer Colored Vinyl]

Lagwagon were the first band Fat Mike ever signed to Fat Wreck Chords, which makes them less a part of the label's history than its foundation. Hoss, released in 1995, is where that sound crystallized into something other bands could copy: fast, melodic, and played far better than punk was supposed to be played.

The technical bar here is the thing people still talk about. Derrick Plourde's drumming was genuinely unprecedented in the genre, lightning quick and full of ideas that had no business in three-chord music, and a generation of punk drummers spent the next decade trying to catch up. Over the top of it Joey Cape did something equally strange for 1995: he wrote sad songs. "Violins" remains the definitive example, an anthem that carries real melancholy without ever slowing down, and it proved aggressive punk could hold emotional weight.

Thirty years on, Hoss is a foundational pillar of 90s skate punk and the record most responsible for what people mean when they say the Fat Wreck sound.
