The subtitle on the cover reads "A Short Film by Kendrick Lamar," and that is not marketing. Released in October 2012, Kendrick's major-label debut is built as a single continuous story: a teenager borrows his mom's van, goes looking for a girl, and by the end of the night has watched a friend die and started reckoning with everything Compton had handed him. Skits carry the narrative, the chronology folds back on itself, and the whole thing lands like a film you can only watch with your eyes closed.
Dr. Dre executive produced, and the record moves effortlessly between scales. "Swimming Pools (Drank)" and "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe" are radio songs with a knife hidden inside them. "Backseat Freestyle" is pure teenage bravado over a Hit-Boy beat. Then "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst" stretches past twelve minutes across multiple narrators and turns the album into something closer to literature. Drake appears on "Poetic Justice," Jay Rock rides shotgun on "Money Trees," MC Eiht anchors the title track, and Dre himself closes it out on "Compton." Just Blaze, Pharrell, Scoop DeVille, T-Minus, and Sounwave fill in the rest of the production.
It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 242,000 copies, earned Album of the Year and Best Rap Album nominations at the 56th Grammys, and has since spent more than a decade on the chart, making it the longest-charting rap studio album in history. It routinely tops lists of the greatest concept albums ever made, and more than a decade later that reputation has only hardened.
This 2LP edition presents the full album across four sides via Aftermath and Interscope. One of the essential rap records of the century.
