Johnny Marr wrote his fifth solo album in London, road-tested the songs across the East Coast of North America, and then took them home to Manchester to record. The Age of Everything is the result, and he calls it the most cathartic record he has made.
Lead single "Spin" sets the tone: soaring, urgent, and wired to the feeling of too much information coming in at once. The title, Marr says, sums up how a lot of people are feeling right now, overwhelmed but not without a sense of possibility. Across ten songs, from "Beyond the Rain" and "Ophelia" to "In and Out of Love" and the closing "All in a Life," the record is sharp, fast, and dynamic, shaped by the energy and tension of the city it was made in.
It follows 2022's Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 and arrives as Marr plays the biggest solo shows of his career, including Manchester's Castlefield Bowl and London's OVO Arena Wembley. Four decades after his jangling guitar defined The Smiths, he is still writing with real drive.
