Johnny Cash - At San Quentin

A year after Folsom, Cash went back inside, this time to San Quentin with a British film crew documenting everything. What they caught was more dangerous than the first record. Cash plays the title track, a song he wrote about the prison itself, then plays it again because the inmates demand it, and for a moment the room feels genuinely close to tipping over.

"A Boy Named Sue," performed here for the first time from a lyric sheet, became his biggest pop hit and won a Grammy. Bob Dylan's "Wanted Man" opens the set, and the closing "Folsom Prison Blues" ties the two records together.

At San Quentin went to number one on the Billboard 200, an almost unheard-of feat for a country album at the time, and it remains Cash at his most confrontational.
