Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison

January 1968, Folsom State Prison, two shows in one day in front of an audience with nothing to lose. Johnny Cash had been pitching the idea of a prison record for years and finally had a producer willing to let him try it. The result revived his career and became one of the greatest live albums ever made.

The crowd is the co-star. You can hear the roar when he sings about shooting a man in Reno just to watch him die, the laughter during "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog," the tension under "25 Minutes to Go." June Carter joins him for "Jackson," and the set closes with "Greystone Chapel," written by an inmate in the audience who had no idea Cash had learned it.

It hit number one on the country chart and crossed over to the pop top twenty, proving Cash was still the most compelling performer in America.
