Easily one of the most important records ever made, A Love Supreme was John Coltrane's pinnacle studio outing, a record that compiled all his prior innovations, articulated his deep spirituality, and offered a glimpse into the final two and a half years of his life, sadly, his last. Recorded in a single session at Van Gelder Studio on December 9, 1964, and released by Impulse! Records in January 1965, the album finds Coltrane's classic quartet, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones, creating one of the most thought-provoking, concise, and technically accomplished albums of their entire collaborative run.

Composed of four continuous movements, "Acknowledgement," "Resolution," "Pursuance," and "Psalm," the suite builds a thematic progression toward an understanding of spirituality through meditation, something Coltrane himself described in the liner notes as simply "a thank you to God." From the flowing, now-iconic bass line that opens the record to Coltrane's final breathy notes, he's playing at the absolute peak of his logical yet emotionally varied soloing, with the rest of the group remarkably locked into his spiritual intent throughout.

A Love Supreme remains Coltrane's best-selling album, and in 2021 it became the first jazz record from the 1960s certified Platinum by the RIAA, a recognition that arrived more than fifty years after his death. It's since been added to the National Recording Registry and stands as one of the defining masterpieces in the history of jazz.
