Jason Aldean - My Kinda Party

My Kinda Party is the record that made Jason Aldean a headliner. Released in 2010, it went on to sell in numbers almost no country album of its era matched, and it did so on the back of a song most of Nashville thought was a mistake.

That song is "Dirt Road Anthem." Written by Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford, it put a half-rapped verse over a country chorus and was widely predicted to fail. Instead it became the defining country crossover of the decade and opened the door for everything that followed, for better and worse. Around it sits some of Aldean's most durable material: "Tattoos On This Town" is a genuinely affecting small-town song, "Fly Over States" answers coastal condescension without turning mean, and "Don't You Wanna Stay," his duet with Kelly Clarkson, became a crossover hit in its own right and won them a string of awards.

Fifteen tracks is a lot of album, and not all of it is essential. But the peaks here shaped a decade of country radio, and the record has aged into a document of exactly when the genre's centre of gravity shifted.
