Jay Kay was barely in his twenties when he turned a failed Brand New Heavies audition into one of the defining debuts of British funk and acid jazz. After self-releasing "When You Gonna Learn" through Acid Jazz Records in 1992, a socially conscious track inspired by Native American philosophy that he fought to keep intact against his producer's wishes, Kay landed a one million dollar, eight album deal with Sony Soho Square. Emergency on Planet Earth, released in June 1993, was the result, and it arrived with enough force to become the fastest selling debut album in the UK since George Michael's Faith.
The record moves with a live, organic energy that set Jamiroquai apart from the sample-heavy dance music dominating the early 90s. "Too Young to Die" and the eight and a half minute "Blow Your Mind," recorded in a single take, showcase the deep, jazz-trained chemistry of Kay's backing band, while the title track and "Revolution 1993" lean into the environmental and political concerns that ran through the album's lyrics. It's a debut built on real musicianship and genuine conviction rather than studio polish, and that authenticity is exactly what made it connect.
Emergency on Planet Earth shot straight to number one on the UK album chart, went platinum, and ultimately sold over a million copies worldwide, launching Jamiroquai as one of the defining bands of the British funk revival. This 30th anniversary edition, marking three decades since the band's formation and that first single, presents the album as a double LP on transparent vinyl, housed in a gatefold jacket with spot gloss embellishments and printed inner sleeves. A 12 inch insert includes Jay Kay's own liner notes from 2013 and 2017, giving longtime fans a firsthand look back at how it all started.
