Released in 1986, Somewhere in Time was Iron Maiden's sixth studio album and their most futuristic, a record that brought guitar synthesizers into the band's sound and wrapped it in some of the most detailed cover art Derek Riggs ever painted. Coming off a massive world tour, Maiden used it to stretch out and explore.
Adrian Smith stepped forward as a songwriter, giving the band "Wasted Years," one of their most beloved anthems, and "Stranger in a Strange Land." Steve Harris contributed the galloping title track, "Heaven Can Wait" with its stadium-ready chant, and the epic "Alexander the Great," while Bruce Dickinson soars over all of it.
Long a fan favorite, the album has only grown in stature over the decades, and its more melodic, layered approach pointed the way to Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Somewhere in Time is reissued as a limited 140-gram LP on oxblood vinyl, featuring the 2015 remaster.
