Before the hooks, before the makeover, there was this. Pretty on the Inside, Hole's 1991 debut, is a howling, scraping noise-rock record produced by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Don Fleming, and it makes no attempt whatsoever to be liked.

Courtney Love screams more than she sings, Eric Erlandson's guitar sounds like it is being dismantled, and songs like "Teenage Whore," "Garbadge Man," and "Good Sister/Bad Sister" lurch between sludge and sudden bursts of speed. The closing title track and "Clouds" hint at the melodic writing that would come later.

It was named album of the year by parts of the British press and remains the rawest thing the band ever put out.

Pressed on black 180-gram vinyl.
