HEALTH spent the late 2000s as a Los Angeles noise band, making records that were admired and largely unlistenable by design. Then they scored Max Payne 3, disappeared for four years, and came back in 2015 with an album built out of pop structures and industrial production. Death Magic alienated a chunk of their original audience and won them a considerably larger one.
The turn was deliberate. Working with Andrew Dawson and Lars Stalfors, the band kept the noise but subordinated it to melody. "STONEFIST" is the pivot point, a genuine hook buried under distortion that resolves into something close to euphoric. "NEW COKE" and "MEN TODAY" are the harshest tracks, pure blown-out aggression. "LIFE" and "L.A. LOOKS" are the closest the band have come to writing straightforward songs, and Jake Duzsik's thin, almost frail vocal is what keeps them from tipping into anthem territory.
Ten years on, this is the record that made the current wave of industrial-adjacent pop possible, and it still sounds meaner than most of what followed it.
