No Room for Squares (1963) finds tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley at the height of his hard bop powers. Building on earlier masterpieces like Soul Station and Workout, Mobley elevates his artistry as a bandleader, composer, and improviser across two separate sessions featuring different quintet line-ups. The March 7 session showcases Mobley with Donald Byrd (trumpet), Herbie Hancock (piano), Butch Warren (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) on Mobley originals like "Up a Step" and "Old World, New Imports." The October 2 session brings together Lee Morgan (trumpet), Andrew Hill (piano), John Ore (bass), and Jones again on drums, delivering standout performances on "Three Way Split," "No Room for Squares," plus Morgan’s "Carolyn" and "Me ‘N You." Complete with one of Reid Miles’ most iconic cover designs, this Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes.
