Since 2011, Guerilla Toss have been NYC’s premier experimental dance-punk shapeshifters, fusing art-rock chaos with groove-driven euphoria. On their fifth full-length, You’re Weird Now — their second outing for Sub Pop — the band delivers their most joyful and radically inclusive statement yet: a love letter to the power of “weird” as both identity and creative force.
Recorded at Trey Anastasio’s famed Vermont studio The Barn, the album brought together a dreamlike collision of musical worlds. Produced by Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, The Jicks) and featuring contributions from Anastasio himself, You’re Weird Now bridges indie slackers, jam-band devotees, and the avant-garde misfits Guerilla Toss have always called home. The result is a record as welcoming as it is wild, blurring genre boundaries with fearless abandon.
Frontwoman Kassie Carlson anchors the record’s vision with her singular energy, embracing “weird” as a badge of courage. Songs like “Red Flag to Angry Bull” crescendo into a campfire-style singalong where Carlson trades verses with Malkmus, all while Anastasio lays down a distinctly Phish-y solo that refracts the moment through pure cosmic joy. Elsewhere, the band leans into kaleidoscopic grooves, angular guitar lines, and ecstatic synth textures, reaffirming their role as the connective tissue between punk, jam, and experimental pop.
At its core, You’re Weird Now is more than just an album — it’s an ethos. Guerilla Toss champion self-expression without compromise, reminding us that embracing what makes us different is both punk as hell and essential for survival. Like Carlson’s so-called “punk lunches” that fueled the sessions — a mix of whatever was on hand, thrown together with imagination and love — the record is unpredictable, nourishing, and uniquely satisfying.
Weird isn’t a pejorative here. It’s a movement, and Guerilla Toss invite everyone to the table.
