When Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett unveiled a cartoon band in 2001, nobody quite knew what to make of it. Gorillaz were 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel on screen, and behind them was one of the most inventive pop projects of the century, built on dub, hip-hop, Britpop and lo-fi electronics all at once.
The self-titled debut is loose, weird and full of hooks. "Clint Eastwood," with its spaghetti western whistle and Del the Funky Homosapien's verses, became a worldwide hit, and "19-2000" and "Rock the House" kept the run going. Dan the Automator's production gives the album its hazy, head-nodding atmosphere, while Albarn's melancholy melodies float over the top.
Twenty-five years on, the debut still sounds like the start of something genuinely new, the moment a virtual band became one of the most successful acts of its era.
This edition is part of a series marking 25 years of Gorillaz and is pressed on two LPs of camouflage green, brown and black vinyl.
