If the Gorillaz debut was a brilliant experiment, Demon Days was the masterpiece. Released in 2005, Damon Albarn's cartoon band teamed up with producer Danger Mouse for a darker, more cohesive record about a world sliding toward chaos, and it became one of the defining albums of the decade.
"Feel Good Inc.," with De La Soul's verses and that unforgettable laugh, was everywhere, and "DARE," featuring Shaun Ryder, "Dirty Harry" and "Kids With Guns" kept the hits coming. But the album works best as a whole, moving from the eerie "Last Living Souls" through the gorgeous "El Mañana" to the gospel-choir finale of the title track, with guests like MF DOOM and Dennis Hopper woven throughout.
Two decades later it still sounds both strange and timeless, the moment Gorillaz proved they were far more than a novelty.
This reissue is part of a series marking 25 years of Gorillaz and is pressed on gradient color vinyl as a double LP.
