Gojira - The Way of All Flesh [Blue Transparent]

The Way of All Flesh is Gojira's death album. Released in 2008 and written largely around the Tibetan Book of the Dead, it is the darkest and most punishing record in their catalogue, and for a large part of their audience it is also the best.

"Oroborus" opens on the most recognisable riff the band ever wrote, a churning, circular figure that gives the album its immediate identity. "Toxic Garbage Island" is a four-minute blast of pure aggression about ocean plastic. "Vacuity" became the single and got the video, though it is one of the least representative things here. "The Art Of Dying" runs past nine minutes and builds from near-silence into the heaviest passage the band has recorded, and "Yama's Messengers" and "The Silver Cord" show how much melody they were willing to bury inside all that weight.

Joe Duplantier recorded and produced it with the band at their own facilities, and the mix is deliberately dense and airless, which is the correct choice for material this claustrophobic. Randy Blythe of Lamb of God appears on the closing title track.
