Getdown Services are two men from Bristol, Josh Law and Ben Sadler, who make post-punk about the specific indignities of being broke in modern Britain. Massive Champion is their second album and it sharpens everything that made the first one work.
The register is deadpan and the details are painfully exact. "Probiotic" and "The Radiator" build entire songs out of domestic minutiae, delivered in a West Country accent over basslines that owe more to disco than to punk. "Cha Cha Slide" is not a cover and is funnier for it. "What's On Your Mind?" and "Check The Definition" are the closest the record comes to sincerity, and even there the humour is doing structural work rather than deflecting. The duo play almost everything themselves, which gives the arrangements a lopsided quality that suits the writing.
Britain has produced a lot of talk-sung post-punk in the last few years and most of it takes itself extremely seriously. Getdown Services are funnier and, as a direct result, considerably more affecting.
