Flatland Cavalry came out of Lubbock playing the kind of fiddle-forward Texas country that fills dancehalls, and they built a following the slow way, one room at a time. Work Of Heart, released in March 2026, is their fifth album and their first for Lost Highway. Recorded at Matchbox Studios in Austin with producer Dwight A. Baker, it is twelve songs about what a life spent doing this actually costs.
Cleto Cordero led the writing, with Baker co-writing several tracks, and the range is wider than the band's reputation suggests. "Gone" and "Never Comin' Back" handle the heartbreak. "Life, Love, And Happiness (Entertainer's Lament)" is two minutes of Cordero saying the quiet part out loud about touring, and it is the most exposed thing on the record. "Bird's Eye View," "Nightshine" and the title track pull back toward the stargazing slow-dance register the band does better than almost anyone. Kaitlin Butts sings backup throughout, and Kyle Aaron Lopez's fiddle and string arrangements do most of the emotional lifting, which is exactly the right division of labor for this band.
Signing to a major has not sanded anything down. If anything Work Of Heart is quieter and more honest than what came before, still unmistakably West Texas in its perspective, and the record that should widen the audience considerably.
