Five Finger Death Punch have spent close to twenty years being one of the most commercially successful and critically ignored bands in American metal, and they have never shown much interest in changing either half of that. Legacy is their latest, and the title is not accidental.
The formula is intact and executed with the precision the band have always brought to it. Zoltan Bathory and Andy James build riffs designed to land in an arena, and Ivan Moody still writes hooks that a crowd of twenty thousand can shout back on a first listen. "Legacy" and "Nails In The Coffin" open the record at full volume. "In Time" and "Shelter" are the mid-tempo songs the band have always used to break up a set, closer to hard rock than metal and unembarrassed about it. "Everybody Lies" and "Scapegoat" close things out in the aggrieved register the band's audience has followed them through for two decades.
Nobody comes to this band for reinvention. They come for songs built to be heard outdoors at volume, and Legacy delivers ten of them.
